Much of Dave Smiths work since 1983 is for solo piano and comprises a series of piano concerts, each lasting about one and a half hours.

 


 

Biographical Notes

Dave Smith was born in 1949. He was educated at Madelene College Cambridge. A member of the Scratch Orchestra he has since played in several composer/performer ensembles, principally with John Lewis, Michael Parsons, Howard Skempton, John White, Gavin Bryars and Ben Mason, and also with the English gamelan Orchestra and Liria - specialising respectively in Javanese Classical Music and Albanian Folk music.

He has visited Albania many times and has written articles on the music as well as arranging Albanian compositions for performance

Dave Smith has been a member of the Gavin Bryar's Ensemble since its inception and as well as being involved in many other professional performances as pianist, brass player, percussionist or conductor, including British premieres of music by Harold Budd, Cornelius Cardew, Philip Glass, Ladislav Kupkovic, Ornette Coleman and Christian Wolff.

Dave lectured at De Montfort University for 18 years for whose students he arranged much music and tuned percussion orchestra. At present teaches at the University of Herts and Goldsmiths College London as well as working with COMA (Contemporary Music-making for amateurs).
